Open Music System 2.3

Open Music System (OMS) is quickly becoming a standard for MIDI management. If you already use programs on your computer that use MIDI, it is possible that you already have OMS installed on your machine. We include OMS with Music Ace 2 as an option for MIDI management. If you are not going to use a MIDI keyboard with Music Ace 2, you should not install OMS.

To Install OMS 2.3.6:

  1. On the Music Ace 2 CD-ROM, double-click the "Install OMS 2.3.6" icon.
  2. We recommend that you choose the "Easy Install" option.
  3. You will need to restart your machine after installation is complete.

Running OMS Setup

After your computer has restarted, a window entitled "OMS Applications" should be visible on your desktop. (If it is not, you can get to it by double-clicking on your Hard Drive, then on "Opcode" folder, then on "OMS Applications." You now need to run the OMS Setup program).

  1. Double-click the "OMS Setup" icon.
  2. OMS may present you with a dialog box about AppleTalk. OMS may function better with AppleTalk turned off. Turning off AppleTalk will disconnect your computer from a network or any printers. If you need to be connected to a printer or network, then do not turn off AppleTalk.
  3. OMS will ask you which port it should search for a MIDI interface. Choose whatever port your MIDI keyboard is connected to. OMS should detect any MIDI keyboards that you have connected to your machine. (It might not be able to specifically name the model of your keyboard, but it should recognize that something is there). If you think that OMS did not detect a keyboard or you think there might be another problem, consult the OMS documentation that was installed on your computer or check the on-line documentation at Opcode's Web site (www.opcode.com).
  4. Test your MIDI connection by selecting "Test Studio" under the "studio" top level menu. Press a key on your MIDI keyboard. You should hear "MIDI received" spoken by the OMS test program. Move your mouse cursor over the icon representing your keyboard. It should look like an eighth note. Click the icon and you should hear notes being played by your MIDI keyboard. If you do not get these results, check your MIDI cable connections and verify that your MIDI keyboard is "on" and configured to send and receive MIDI data.
  5. OMS will ask you to save your Studio setup. This file can stay in the "OMS Applications" folder, and you can name it whatever you wish.

To configure Music Ace 2 using OMS, refer to the section of this guide entitled "Configuring Music Ace 2 Using an External MIDI Keyboard."

Note to Music Ace owners:

OMS will cause a slight conflict with the original Music Ace software. You will need to reconfigure the MIDI setup for Music Ace to use OMS. Please refer to the section in this documentation entitled "Updating Music Ace for External MIDI and OMS."
